You're not a trainer, but the lessons could be useful somehow. A friend of mine's not a fighter, but even he knows some basic stealth tactics.

If you're traveling from Cherrygrove to get to Ilex Forest, you're going to be on the road for about a month if you haven't defeated Whitney in Goldenrod.

I'm not planning on staying in Goldenrod, so I don't plan on backtracking too much either. I've done enough of that already.
