[ When Snake turns on the video feed, the first thing people might notice is that the big ancient buildings of Mahogany Town are nowhere to be seen. In fact, things look like they would from people who were newbies and making a post for the first time.

Snake was no newbie... he was just back in newbie-ville, so to speak. The old soldier gave a bit of a smile. ]

Going to start from the bottom and work my way up. I'm going to make myself useful again... And I'll continue to get stronger. I can't stay in Mahogany anymore.

But I'll always be here and you can contact me any time. I need to do this... before I lose my will to do anything anymore.

[ It's obvious that he's directing his words to someone in particular, but he doesn't want to just message them. ]

Back to New Bark Town... Already been a long time since I've seen this place. Not a bad place to relax, either. [ SUDDENLY A BIG ONIX FACE NUDGES INTO SNAKE making a pitiful crooning sound. ] Nngh... Oh yeah, my team's pretty bummed out that the prom's done... It wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.

[Otacon inwardly sighed to himself. When would the old soldier listen?]

Starting anew is always a good thing. If Mei Ling were here she could give a Chinese Proverb about your new start. [He offered his friend a smile. Ok, so his proverbs weren't that good.]

What, not going to give me one of yours?

[ Snake gives his friend a grin, elbowing him lightly in the gut. ]

[Otacon laughed softly at Snake's words.]

I can if you'd like. [He thought of something.]

When the duck refuses to sit on the water, the water is usually restless. It means things are usually unsettled because ducks like sitting on water. [Totally useless.]

... Hhn... I'm not sure your proverbs have gotten any better.

[ Snake gave a bit of a sigh. ] Doesn't that mean that danger's nearby?

They probably haven't. [He gave Snake a knowing smile. Otacon knew how bad he was at remembering Mei Ling's proverbs, relying on scraps of paper with them written down on.]

I don't think so. I think it means be on your guard, even when you think things are going ok.

[ Snake rubs the back of his neck, then his lower back. The straps of his backpack were also starting to cause his shoulders to ache. ]

We might need Mei-Ling after all.

I don't think we'll need Mei Ling, Snake. We're doing fine on our own so far, aren't we? [He offered a slow smile to his friend. Hey, he was trying here.]

Hheh. Whatever you say, Otacon.

[ Snake took in a short breath, looking around New Bark Town. ] This place doesn't offer much... We should head to Cherrygrove.

Cherrygrove? Is that where we're going to next? [Because it all sounded exciting to Otacon. All these new places to go and with his best buddy, Snake.]

Yeah, it's a few days of hiking and walking through the wilderness. There's a nice path we can follow though, if I remember right.

[ The thought of traveling again sends both a spark of glee through the old man, and a twinge of pain through his spine. Snake rubs his back in response. ]

...Hnn... Been a while since I actually did any of this stuff, but it can't be worse than sneaking through South America.

I'm up for that, although I'm not as good as you at walking through wilderness. You might have to go slow for an amateur like me. [He offered Snake a small smile. He was the guy who told Snake where the easiest path was or where to go. Not the guy who traipsed through the jungle.]

It feels good to be with you again, Snake. Doing all of this stuff like we used to.

All the stuff we used to do? [ Snake grunts. ] Didn't we used to go on sneaking missions? You telling me where to go, me doing all the dirty work.

Didn't really have to go outside much, not until this mission...

Yeah, of course we did. It's just nice to do it again here in Johto. I want to be useful, Snake. You know that.

What do you mean "useful"?

[ Snake raises a brow. ] You're your own man here, Otacon. We're not on a mission now. I just wanted a friend to travel with.

I know we're not on a mission, I just like being with you, ok? Doing things like this and spending time with one another. You've got a friend.

[He offered Snake a small smile. What he did mean was that he knew Snake didn't have long but didn't want to show any bad feelings if Snake died within Johto. He doesn't want to lose you, buddy.]

I'm your wingman, right? That's what I mean by usefulness. I guess it's just a habit I've gotten into of being there when you need me most.

Hhn.

All right, I appreciate it.

But we're even more out of luck here... We'll have to cook for ourselves in the wilderness. None of Sunny's eggs to keep us going. [ A wry smile. ]

Damn. That could prove problematic. You're probably a much better cook than me, Snake. I can assist you but I pretty much fail at anything culinary. If the Mk.II were here I could possibly program it to cook something.

[Why not? It had arms....sort of.]

I'm an awful cook. All I ever eat are rations and noodles.

[ Raises a brow at Otacon. ] Even if you COULD program it to cook something, wouldn't it be working off of your knowledge of cooking? We'd still get the same result.

Rations and noodles are nice if cooked and eaten correctly. Of course, you know all about that. [He shot a look at his friend.]

Hm, I suppose that's true. Yet, the Mk.II has it's own ability to develop it's own skills and advance it's automotive and cognitive functions. Sort of like an advanced AI which keeps on developing.

It looked kinda goofy to me. I guess that was part of its charm, eh?

Goofy? Is that what you thought? [Oops. Otacon takes pride in the Mk.II and goofy isn't a very nice word to him. Pfft. You're upsetting his inner-geek, Snake.]

It's a very sophisticated piece of technology, Snake. It's not meant to be goofy, but technical and it is very intelligent.
